I could hear Rachel and Chris moving around out in the kitchen, so I made my way to the kitchen to brew some coffee. It was going to be a long day, so coffee was a must.

“Good morning, guys,” I said as I walked into the kitchen.

“Not much good about this morning,” Chris replied.

“Well, hopefully we can figure some things out this morning."

I felt awful. Elijah was only in this position because of me. If he hadn't come over, then he wouldn't be in jail. On the other side, I probably would have been dead. I blamed myself; this was my fault.

“Are you guys ready to head there?”

“Let’s go!”

As we walked into the police station, I said a little prayer for Elijah. I didn’t know if he had ever been arrested before. If not, I imagined this was a bit scary for him.

“How can I help you?” the woman behind the counter asked.

“We are here to see Elijah Barnes.”

“Take a seat. He will be able to visit shortly.”

I started thinking about the reason why the cops arrested him so long after the incident. I had just spoken to Dwayne’s mom a couple of days ago, and she was distraught. Could this be her doing? Surely not.

I stepped outside to call Dwayne’s mom.

“I just wanted to check on you to see if you were doing okay?”

“I’m doing okay now that they have someone in custody for murdering Dwayne!”

Holy shit! It was her. I never thought she would do something like this. She must know the truth, she must.

“He didn’t murder Dwayne. He acted in self-defense when your son was trying to kidnap and possibly murder me!”

“Well, the cops agree with me. Elijah will be going to trial for murder and will be convicted, and justice will be served for my son’s death. Mark my words!” she yelled into the phone before disconnecting.

How could she do this to him? She sent an innocent man to jail because she refused to believe that her son was troubled. The cops agreed with her because Elijah was sitting in jail right now. They knew the background between Dwayne and me. He was just in jail like three months prior for assaulting me into unconsciousness. He had apparently shown that he was violent.

"You guys will never believe this!" I said, rushing back inside.

I told Chris and Rachel about what Dwayne’s mom said, and they were as shocked as I was about it.

“He’s ready for you guys.”

Jolene had been trying to figure out something to help him with his case. So far, there had been no luck, but we weren’t giving up.

I walked into the meeting room, and he looked awful. He looked dirty, but I supposed he didn’t get the same luxury as he did on the outside.

“How are you doing?”

“I’m alright. I got lucky and got a kick ass cellmate.”

“We have missed you. Been worried. You’ve been in here for months. Your trial is coming up in a couple of weeks, and we don’t have anything to help yet.
